Space Age Classroom Science Experiments
Tim Van Milligan, Sat Dec 10th

By Tim Van Milligan

Are you looking for some topics to present that can addexcitement to your science classroom? Rocketry and spaceexploration, like no other subject, have a way to captivatestudents that makes it easy for them to learn science. They arehaving so much fun, that they don't even realize they arelearning basic science concepts.

To leverage the benefits of this area of study, you can use yourschool's computer to explore a lot of different science topics. In the January 2005 issue of the education magazine, "TechDirections" (http://www.techdirections.com), there is an articleby Spencer C. Wilson of J.R. Fugett Middle School in WestChester. In it, he describes how he uses a rocket designsoftware, called RockSim (http://www.rocksim.com) to showstudents the process of engineering design.

In this article, I'd like to give you some other ideas on how touse the model rocket design software to demonstrate other basicscience concepts. Here are some benefits to using RockSimsoftware:

1. Allows the student to simulate hundreds of rocket flightsvery quickly -- this saves lots of money! Just think of the timesaved too. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollar buyingmotors and hours-and-hours of time building differentconfigurations, launching, recovering, and repacking rockets totest one control feature.

2. Safety. When you go out to fly rockets, knowing how they'llbehave is an important aspect of safety. Precautions can bemade. By running the simulations, the students learn whatconcepts contribute to keeping the actual launch safe.

3. The scientific value is awesome. Each launch simulationgenerates a mountain of useful data. Analyzing this data is afantastic way to teach the scientific method.

4. Students love software because it is fun! It has featureslike a video game, so the students may not realize how much theyare learning at the same time.

5. The RockSim software is the same tool that is used by realrocketry professionals - like NASA, military contractors, anduniversities. So you can feel confident in the results you getback from the program.

6. The software allows students to explore their creativity. They can design vastly different looking models, while learningengineering skills, assembly steps, and physics.

Here are just some of the many topics you can explore withRockSim:

1. Aerodynamics and drag reduction.

2. Forces of flight: Lift, Drag, Thrust, and Gravity.

3. Projectile motion.

4. Rocket propulsion as used for space travel.

5. Atmospheric studies: how does temperature and pressure affectperformance?

6. Planetary differences: how does the same rocket perform ondifferent planets in our solar system.

7. Dynamics and harmonic motion with damping.

8. Engineering - how parts fit together.

9. Newton's Laws of motion.

10. Artistic expression – because every student can design adifferent looking rocket, and change colors of the components tofurther increase the rocket's uniqueness.

11. Explaining distance, velocity, and acceleration.

12. Material properties, like density and volume.

13. The importance of weight and balance (CG position) whendesigning rockets.

14. Explaining that Work = Force X Distance.

15. Explaining the concepts of Kinetic and Potential Energy.

16. Showing free-fall, and terminal velocity.

17. The importance of units and unit conversion.

18. The importance of following directions.

19. Exporting data and using spreadsheet programs to performdata reduction and manipulation

20. To show why multi-stage and cluster motor rockets are usedin real rockets.

21. Concept of stored chemical energy (in the rocket propellant)and how it is converted to mechanical energy.

22. Concept of efficiency - getting the most performance fromthe least exertion of energy. Can be explained by the differenttypes of propellant formulations.

23. Showing the concept of momentum and how it affects theoptimum mass of the rocket.

24. Finding the optimal launch angle for breezy conditions.

25. Optimal launch angle for distance (ballistic curves), andhow it varies with the thrust curve of the motor.

26. Show how the distribution of mass affects the dynamicstability of the rocket.

27. Demonstrating the concept of "Numeric Precision" -- the moreiterations performed, the better the accuracy.

28. Show how different shaped components affects the staticstability of the rocket.

29. Compare the thrust curves of different motors. This can showhow different geometries (hole size, location, dimensions)affect the thrust produced by the rocket.

30. Concept of "Impulse:" which is a thrust force multiplied bythe time duration that thrust is created. The higher theimpulse, the more power the motor has.

As you can see, the RockSim software is a versatile tool. You'llsave hundreds of dollars because it can be used in a variety ofways.

Milwaukee radio host smeared "greedy, overpaid unionized schoolteacher[s]" who talk about global warming
On his Milwaukee radio talk show, Mark Belling referred to schoolteachers who talk to their students about global warming as "idiot union teacher[s]," "liberal unionized hack[s]," "greedy, overpaid unionized schoolteacher[s]," and "fruitcake[s]."
Hannity compared carbon offsets to "cheat[ing] on your wife," ignored Murdoch's efforts to make News Corp. carbon neutral
On <em>Hannity &amp; Colmes</em>, Sean Hannity criticized the purchase of credits to offset one's "carbon footprint," asserting, "Those offsets -- that is the biggest hoax in the world. ... You know what it's like? You go cheat on your wife, and then say, 'Honey, but don't worry. I bought an offset.' Good luck." Hannity has yet to address the pledge by News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch "to be carbon neutral, across all our businesses" -- which includes Fox News -- "by 2010."
Discussing TCPR claims, O'Reilly said he'd "like to hear [Gore's] side of things," but ignored Gore's response to TCPR
Bill O'Reilly asserted: "The Tennessee Center for Policy Research [TCPR] says the former vice president [Al Gore] is still using a massive amount of energy at his Tennessee mansion -- more than 20 times the national average." O'Reilly later stated: "So it looks like Gore is a pinhead, but we would like to hear his side of things. And he has an open invitation to appear on the <em>Factor</em>." But at no point did O'Reilly mention that Gore has reportedly given "his side of things" in response to a June 17 TCPR press release on the subject of Gore's purported energy use.
Hume claimed Gore's "energy use has surged more than 10 percent," ignored Gore's response that it's all "green power"
On <em>Special Report</em>, citing purported findings by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, Brit Hume claimed that Al Gore's "energy use has surged more than 10 percent" since environmentally friendly renovations were completed on his home. Hume offered no response from Gore. Responding to the charge, a Gore spokeswoman stated that "[w]hen [the Gores] do use power, it's green power." According to the Tennessee Valley Authority, green power "create[s] less waste and pollution" than standard electricity.
<em>Wash. Times</em>' Pruden falsely claimed that "the earth has been measurably cooling for the last decade"
In a <em>Washington Times</em> column, Wesley Pruden falsely claimed that "the earth has been measurably cooling for the last decade, despite everything [former Vice President] Al [Gore] and his followers have done about it." In fact, the United Kingdom's Met (Meteorological) Office lists as a "fact" that "[t]emperatures are continuing to rise" and states that "temperature change over the latest decade (1998-2007) alone shows a continued warming of 0.1&deg; C per decade."
MSNBC hosted Breaux and Lott to defend oil and gas companies -- but failed to note they're lobbyists for them
On <em>MSNBC Live</em>, Andrea Mitchell discussed energy policy with former Sens. John Breaux and Trent Lott but failed to disclose that both are lobbyists for major oil and gas companies. While Mitchell said that Lott and Breaux "formed a firm" together, she did not note that their firm conducts lobbying or that its clients include oil and gas companies Chevron, Shell, and Plains Exploration &amp; Production Co.
Beck revived falsehood that Bill Clinton said, "We've got to slow down our economy" to fight global warming
On his nationally syndicated radio show, Glenn Beck falsely claimed that former President Bill Clinton said, "We've got to slow down our economy" in order to combat global warming, and aired a portion of a speech Clinton made in January. However, as Clinton's full remarks make clear, he did not suggest "slow[ing] down our economy" to fight global warming.
Jonah Goldberg misrepresented Gore's comments about Hurricane Katrina
In his <em>Los Angeles Times</em> column, Jonah Goldberg asserted that in an NPR interview, Al Gore "chuckled" at the idea that Hurricane Katrina "was God's wrath for New Orleans' sexual depravity," then "went on to blame Katrina on man's energy sinfulness." In fact, Gore stated during the interview that "any individual storm can't be linked singularly to global warming." Goldberg also claimed that the numbers of polar bears "have quadrupled in the last 50 years"; in fact, data to support estimates of the polar bear population 50 years ago are reportedly nonexistent, recent growth in the polar bear population is believed to be linked to hunting bans, and the Department of Interior found that "the polar bear is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future."
Previewing McCain's environment speech, Reuters did not mention his voting record or include criticisms of his positions
Reuters reported that Sen. John McCain would pledge "to take the lead in combating global climate change if elected president in a speech that set him apart from the policies of U.S. President George W. Bush." However, in reporting on McCain's environmental positions that his campaign believes will "win support from independents and centrist Democrats," Reuters did not mention his voting record and did not include any criticism of McCain's positions. By contrast, <em>The Washington Post</em> noted that "McCain's lifetime League of Conservation Voters score is 24 percent, compared with 86 for Obama and 86 for Clinton."
Fox's Baier misrepresented Gore's comments about Myanmar cyclone
Fox News' Bret Baier claimed that in an interview on NPR, "Former Vice President Al Gore says global warming is to blame for the cyclone in Myanmar." In fact, while Gore did discuss the cyclone in the context of global warming, he also stated -- just moments earlier -- that "any individual storm can't be linked singularly to global warming."
Fox's E.D. Hill falsely claimed that "U.N. meteorologists" say "the planet may actually cool off for the 10th year in a row"
On<em> America's Pulse</em>, host E.D. Hill falsely claimed, in a teaser for an upcoming segment, that "the U.N. says the planet may actually cool off for the 10th year in a row." Hill later asserted: "U.N. meteorologists now saying that we could have, for the 10th year in a row, a colder year, temperatures ... decreasing, not warming, getting colder." In fact, global mean temperatures, as measured in two widely used data sets, have not decreased in each of the past 10 years; further, according to those data sets' producers, the data continue to show a long-term warming trend.
<em>NY Times</em> understated Inhofe's views on global warming
In an article discussing potentially competitive 2008 Senate elections, <em>The New York Times</em> understated Sen. James Infohe's views on global warming, reporting that Inhofe "has said that its effects are exaggerated." In fact, Inhofe has repeatedly referred to global warming as the "greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people" and reportedly compared Al Gore's global warming documentary to Adolf Hitler's <em>Mein Kampf</em>.
<em>WSJ</em> quoted McCain touting his "pro-environment positions," but didn't note his poor LCV score
<em>The Wall Street Journal</em> uncritically reported that Sen. John McCain "said his pro-environment positions," among others, would "make him competitive" in California. In fact, McCain has a lifetime rating of 24 percent from the League of Conservation Voters. By contrast, Sen. Hillary Clinton has a lifetime rating of 87 percent and Sen. Barack Obama, 86 percent.
O'Reilly said question of whether humans are causing global warming is "all guesswork"
Responding to a viewer's email about whether the current global warming "scare" is "natural" or "man-made," Fox News' Bill O'Reilly asserted: "It's all guesswork." Contrary to O'Reilly's assertion, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has concluded that the Earth is warming and human activity is very likely responsible for most of that warming.
Blitzer did not challenge Matalin's assertion that global warming is "a largely unscientific hoax" and a "political concoction"
On CNN's <em>The Situation Room</em>, host Wolf Blitzer did not challenge Republican strategist Mary Matalin's assertion that global warming is "a largely unscientific hoax. And it's a political concoction." As <em>Media Matters for America</em> has documented, numerous scientific organizations share the consensus view that the Earth is warming.
